An important part of Head Start’s success is engaging families as their child’s first and most important teacher. In all facets of the program, we take every opportunity to recognize individual achievement, as well as the growth families experience throughout the year. Despite the challenges of this past year, many parents took time and worked towards their personal goals. Head Start and Early Head Start home visitors nominated families in four different categories: Nancy Martin Outstanding Parent Engagement, Achievement in Family Well-Being, Achievement in Families as Advocates and Leaders, and Achievement in Families as Learners.
In May, we recognized eight winners during our 37th Annual Parent Recognition Event, our first virtual ceremony, with over 100 attendees. Home visitors introduced the winning families, offering insight into each winner’s successes. One home visitor said of a nominee “She is truly a role model and a leader, advocating for her family, working with parents, engaging in CSC programming, and outreaching for partnerships in the community. She provides endless and ongoing support for everyone she meets. She is enthusiastic, passionate, and driven, and phenomenal to work with”.

It is hard to believe that it has been three years since the inception of the Early Learning Resource Centers (ELRC) at Community Services for Children (CSC)! Each year, the ELRC’s serve approximately 20,000 children in the Child Care Works subsidized childcare program, across 17 counties in Pennsylvania. This program supports low-income working parents in accessing high quality care for their children allowing them to continue to work, attend school or job training. In addition, the ELRC’s have supported early childhood programs in improving the quality of the services they provide through the Keystone STARS program. Through the support and guidance of the ELRC’s, 356 programs have achieved the highest STAR level in the five regional areas we serve.
Over the course of the past 3 years, ELRC staff have worked hard to ensure that the families who come through our doors have access to all of the services they may need. Over 18,000 referrals have been made to connect families to community resources for housing, food, mental health services, and many others.
Like all staff at CSC, the individuals who work with the ELRC program are committed to creating the best possible outcomes for children and families in our communities. It is understood that quality early learning is the key to future success. On behalf of the entire team, Pam Cho, Vice President of Early Learning Resource Centers, states “We are thrilled to be entering our 4th year supporting children, families, and early childhood providers.”

Community Services for Children (CSC) is proud to introduce Mimi’s Book Club. Mimi’s Book Club was created by Carol Koening in memory of her mother, Mary Guthrie who her grandchildren lovingly called “Mimi”. Mimi’s Book Club allows us to purchase books for the children and families we serve. The books given to the children from Mimi’s Book Club will take their imagination on a journey to a whole new world.

This year’s book club fund will be granting books to children in the summer start program as they prepare for Kindergarten. Their summer focus is math and literacy and both books they receive will go along with their classroom focus. Mimi’s Book Club grants brand new books to children who may not be able to afford one and meets CSC’s Vision: Engaged communities where every child thrives and every family succeeds.

CSC Receives Community Awards
- Community Services for Children is honored to announce we were named as recipient of the 2021 Collaboration Award during the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce Nonprofit Council’s 8th Annual Collaboration Conference, which took place virtually on April 13, 2021. The award was given in recognition of the work being conducted at the Neighborhood Resource Center.
The Neighborhood Resource Center (NRC) aligns with CSC’s vision to foster “engaged communities where every child thrives and every family succeeds.” “As more and more people in downtown Allentown are tapping into the programs at the NRC, we are finding that families really need additional resources based within their own neighborhood,” said Paula Margraf, CEO/President of Community Services for Children.
The Neighborhood Resource Center, which opened in 2020, through support from City Center Allentown, offers child and family-oriented services in collaboration with community partners all in one convenient location. The center has brought together A Healthy Start by Valley Health Partners, the Allentown School District, Head Start/Early Head Start enrollment services, Kindergarten Jumpstart transition services, and the Early Learning Resource Center. We are also pleased to work with other local not for profit agencies such as the Baum School of Art, Allentown Miller Symphony Hall, and The Literacy Center to name a few.
- Community Services for Children was honored to receive the Air Products Leonard Pool Impact Award, presented virtually on Thursday, April 15, 2021. This recognition came as part of the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley 2021 Celebration of Caring Week. The award, presented by Air Products Community Relations, recognizes a local nonprofit organization that demonstrates a commitment to exceptional community leadership and readiness to serve, values that CSC holds dear.

Family Emergency Fund
Community Services for Children established the Family Emergency Fund to provide support to families who are confronted with unforeseen financial burdens and have exhausted all other outlets. This program is made entirely possible by charitable donations.
During the past four months, financial help was provided to eight families to many areas of Allentown needing rental assistance. Funds were also used to fulfill food insecurity needs and help with the purchase of diapers and seasonally appropriate clothing.
CSC home visitors work closely with families to explore options and help them find a path to future stability. Jonathan Calcano, Head Start, Family Engagement Partner, shared “After seeing a child come to the classroom with clothes that don’t fit, it’s great to help with necessities that some of us take for granted.” Being able to help in this manner supports our goals of providing early education excellence because if a child feels good about herself or himself they will come to the classroom ready to learn. The parents told Jonathan it meant so much to be provided with gift cards to allow their children to pick out their own clothes.
The multi-generational model employed by CSC and all Head Start programs is essential to the programs’ success because, in addition to providing resources and education, the staff works tirelessly to help prepare families for life-long success. On one such visit, the father of four girls shared his goal in the program is “to provide for and support his daughters and for them to have a great career in the future.”
