Rising STARS Mentoring

The Rising STARS Mentor Program is a free service formal mentoring program through OCDEL. This program is a continuous quality support to move a program from a STAR 1 to a STAR 2 or from a STAR 2 to a STAR 3.

What is Mentoring?

Mentoring is a professional relationship in which an experienced person (a STAR 3 or 4 program director: the Mentor) assists another (STAR 1 or STAR 2 program director: the mentee) in developing specific skills and knowledge that will enhance their program’s quality and encourage professional growth.

Mentors have worked in developing quality childcare programs and can show Mentees how to achieve quality. They can provide wisdom about workplaces issues and career challenges and help Mentees look at the STAR standards from a new perspective.

Potential Mentees: Why should I choose Mentoring?

The Mentors have committed to working with a program through one in person meeting and two other meaningful contacts per month. They review the STAR standards and work with the Mentee to set goals on how to meet the standards. The Mentor relationship will last approximately 3-6 months.

Mentors share resources to facilitate the Mentee’s growth. They focus on development in continuous quality improvement and prepare their Mentee for their pre-destination visit with their STARS Manger.

Mentoring offers the opportunity to meet with a peer who has a wealth of experience in quality childcare. They understand that change in a program can be difficult and they can offer their guidance and support.

  • Mentoring is a free service.
  • Materials to help organize a programs information are provided at no cost.
  • Mentors provide three “check in” contacts a month to help keep the focus on the Mentees goal of moving forward in STARS.

Potential Mentors: Why should I become a Mentor?

If you are a STAR 3 or STAR 4 program director, please consider becoming a Mentor for the Rising STARS Mentor program. There are many benefits to Mentoring:

  • Increase the quality of childcare programs through sharing your knowledge.
  • Strengthen the lessons you have already learned. Explaining information that is already familiar helps the Mentor grow in their understanding of the STARS standards.
  • Help someone see his or her own gifts. Mentors are able to encourage growth in their Mentees by reinforcing strengths and developing unique talents.
  • Mentors are able to count their experience Mentoring as their annual Professional growth and development activity.
  • Training  and support is provided to all Mentors.
  • Mentors are rewarded for their efforts through two stipend payments.
