Healthy Marriage: Project G.R.O.W.T.H.

Funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Family Assistance, G.R.O.W.T.H. (Great Relationships Offer Ways to Happiness) is a series of workshops aimed at strengthening families and married couples' relationships. Workshops include communication, decision making, parenting, and conflict management skills critical to nurturing their relationships and sustaining a healthy environment for their children. Married couples enrolled in CSC's Head Start, Early Head Start, Parent Child Home Program, Child Care Subsidy Program, and Pre-K Counts Preschool are eligible to participate. The program is free.

What is a healthy marriage?
A healthy marriage is a marriage built on a foundation where both spouses feel mutually enriched and have a deep respect for one another. It is also defined by commitment from both spouses to on-going growth and the ability to communicate and effectively resolve conflict.

Three reasons why healthy marriages are important
Healthy marriages make a difference for everyone: individuals, children, and communities.

1. Most men and women in healthy marriages live longer, have better mental and physical health, report being happier, and have higher incomes and build more wealth.
2. Children raised in a healthy marriage are more likely to attend college, more likely to succeed academically, less likely to engage in delinquent behaviors or abuse drugs and alcohol, and less likely to divorce when they get married.
3. Communities benefit from healthy marriages by the presence of higher rates of physically and emotionally healthy citizens, higher rates of educated citizens, lower crime statistics, and less need for social services.
